Singapore Student Pass Photo Requirements: Size and Rules

Singapore Student's Pass photo requirements: 400 x 514 px, white background, taken within 3 months, not reused. When you upload it and why ICA rejects it.

Short answer: The Singapore Student's Pass photo requirements are simple to state: a recent, passport-sized, digital colour photograph taken within the last 3 months, following the ICA photo guidelines. For upload through ICA's e-Services that means 400 x 514 pixels, a JPG, JPEG, HEIC, HEIF or PNG file of up to 8 MB, a plain white background, and no filters or retouching. A photo you used for an earlier application or pass will not do.

If you've been accepted by a university, polytechnic, private school or government school in Singapore, the Student's Pass (STP) application asks for this photo early on. ICA's instructions are split across several pages, one for each type of school, plus a formalities page and a photo guidelines page. This guide puts the photo rules from all of them in one place for students and the parents who often apply on their behalf.

Singapore Student Pass photo requirements at a glance

Every Student's Pass application page on the ICA site lists the same item under documents required: "Your recent, passport-sized digital colour photograph taken within the last 3 months." Each page then points you to the photo guidelines, which set the technical spec.

Requirement What ICA asks for
Colour Coloured digital photograph, newly taken
Size 400 x 514 pixels for e-Service upload
File type JPG, JPEG, HEIC, HEIF or PNG
File size Up to 8 MB
Age of photo Taken within the last 3 months, not used in a previous application or pass
Background Plain white
Editing Resizing is fine; no filters, no changes to facial features
Standard ICA follows ISO and ICAO photo specifications

Most of this matches the spec for a Singapore passport or IC photo, so our guide to the ICA photo size applies here too. The main difference for students is timing: you may be uploading it from overseas, months before you arrive.

Does the rule change by type of school?

No. ICA runs separate application pages for Institutes of Higher Learning, approved private education institutions and government and government-aided schools, and all three ask for the same recent colour photo. What changes is the timing and processing.

School type When to apply Processing time ICA lists
Institutes of Higher Learning (NUS, NTU, SMU, polytechnics and others) 2 to 3 months before the course begins Within 1 week, or 2 weeks if a visa is required
Approved private education institutions At least 4 weeks before the new course begins 1 month for a standard new application, 2 weeks for EduTrust accredited schools, 1 week for transfer or renewal
Government, government-aided and independent schools 2 to 3 months before the course Typically 1 week, or 2 weeks if a visa is required

Each application has a non-refundable S$45 processing fee, paid online by Visa or MasterCard, American Express, Internet Direct Debit (DBS/POSB, OCBC, UOB or Standard Chartered) or PayNow. If you already hold a Dependant's Pass, Long-Term Visit Pass or Immigration Exemption Order, the IHL page says you don't need a Student's Pass at all. For the LTVP photo rules, see our LTVP photo requirement guide.

When do you upload the photo?

There are two points where a photo can come up.

  1. At application. You submit the photo with your online application, alongside your school's registration letter, passport biodata page and personal details. ICA says you don't need to be in Singapore while it's processed.
  2. At the In-Principle Approval (IPA) stage. Once approved, you log in to complete the remaining tasks before the IPA expires. The completion of formalities page says that if you need to upload a photograph at this point, it must meet ICA's specifications, and you should avoid filters or heavy retouching "as this can affect facial recognition."

You then pay the S$60 issuance fee (plus S$30 for a Multiple Journey Visa if it applies) and complete formalities by appointment, at the ICA Services Centre or a venue your school arranges.

Why does ICA keep rejecting Student's Pass photos?

The formalities page answers this directly in its FAQ. ICA says a photo is rejected when it doesn't meet these specifications:

  • It must be taken within the last 3 months, which means it must not have been used in previous applications or passes.
  • It can't be digitally enhanced, because that affects facial recognition.
  • It can't be distorted or flipped.
  • It must be clear, in sharp focus and taken against a plain white background.

The first point catches a lot of students. The photo from your home-country passport, your school offer or last year's pass counts as used, even if it still looks like you. Take a new one.

Phone photos are fine if they're done properly. ICA recommends apps made for passport or identity photos and lets you resize the image, but says selfies usually don't meet its requirements and could delay your application. Ask a friend or family member to take it, with your face square to the camera. Our guide to taking a passport photo at home covers light, distance and background.

What happens on biometric enrolment day?

At your formalities appointment, ICA enrols your biometrics in person. Two rules from the formalities page matter here: don't wear coloured or patterned contact lenses, and your photograph must not be digitally enhanced. After formalities you download the digital Student's Pass from FileSG or Singpass. ICA also says you should arrive in Singapore no more than 1 month before your course starts, and all formalities must be done within the IPA validity period.

Renewing your Student's Pass

A renewal is a fresh application, so the same photo rule applies: a new photo taken within the last 3 months. Don't reuse the file from your first application. For an IHL renewal, ICA lists processing within 1 week, or 2 weeks if a visa is required.

Changing the photo on an existing Student's Pass

If your Singpass face verification fails because your photo no longer matches, ICA treats it as a change of photograph. According to the change of particulars page for Student's Pass holders, you must notify ICA within 14 days and apply for a replacement digital STP in person at the ICA Services Centre, 2 Crawford Street, Singapore 207218 (8.00 am to 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday, except public holidays). Bring a passport-sized photograph taken within the last 3 months that isn't digitally enhanced. The replacement costs S$60 and is processed the same day.

Quick checklist before you upload

  • Taken within the last 3 months and never used for another application or pass
  • Colour, full face, looking straight at the camera
  • Plain white background, even light, no shadows
  • 400 x 514 pixels, saved as JPG, JPEG, HEIC, HEIF or PNG, under 8 MB
  • No beauty filters, smoothing, flipping or stretching
  • No coloured or patterned contact lenses

The upload steps on ICA's e-Services work much like the ones in our MyICA digital upload guide.

Making the photo from your phone

If you have a clear photo taken by someone else, IC Photo Singapore (icphotosingapore.com) outputs photos sized to ICA's published spec of 400 x 514 px for online submission. It works from a phone or computer, which helps when you're applying from overseas before your course starts. You upload your photo, check the watermarked preview, and get the digital file after checkout. It doesn't replace ICA's own checks. IC Photo Singapore is an independent service and is not affiliated with ICA.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the Student's Pass photo?

400 x 514 pixels for upload through ICA's e-Services, in colour, as a JPG, JPEG, HEIC, HEIF or PNG file of up to 8 MB.

Can I use my passport photo for my Student's Pass?

Only if it was taken within the last 3 months and hasn't been used for a previous application or pass. In practice that means taking a new photo.

Is the photo rule different for NUS, NTU or a polytechnic?

No. All Institutes of Higher Learning use the same ICA page and the same photo requirement. Private schools and government schools ask for the same photo too.

Can I take my Student's Pass photo with my phone?

Yes. ICA recommends apps made for passport or identity photos and says you may resize the photo, but selfies usually don't meet its requirements, so ask someone else to take it.

Why was my Student's Pass photo rejected?

ICA's FAQ lists four reasons: the photo is older than 3 months or was used before, it was digitally enhanced, it's distorted or flipped, or it isn't clear and sharp against a plain white background.

What if my Student's Pass photo fails Singpass face verification?

Apply for a replacement digital STP in person at the ICA Services Centre with a photo taken within the last 3 months. It costs S$60.

Rules were checked against ICA's official pages in November 2026. We used the Student's Pass application, formalities, change of particulars and photo guideline pages. Check the official ICA Student's Pass page before you apply.
